When I first came to Japan, I had a limited idea and information about Japan, the people and the food. This is because I came from a country that is thousands of kilometers away from Asia. So I was in for a big surprise when I arrived in Japan.First of all, I was so nervous when I arrived at the airport to see very little English…that is when I realized that I was out of my comfort zone. Was it scary? Yes! Was it challenging? Of course! Was it exciting? Definitely! But I was ready to learn anything from this experience. From this point on, my life education continued…
For a year I had to live in the Kansai area. My work involved a lot of traveling between Kobe; Osaka and Kyoto. I remember the first time I used the subway system…it was a nightmare. I felt like I was in a maze with no ending. But after getting lost three or four times I could finally understand the ins and outs of Osaka Umeda Station and other metropolitan stations. One time I even got on the wrong train but it was a chance for me to learn that I should always check the railway line and the kind of train I was going to use. So one year later after making so many mistakes in using the subway system, I can confidently say that I can use the subway system in a big city!
Sometimes we have unexpected experiences that are disturbing or something we didn’t prepare for. However, it is important to keep a positive attitude when we face such an experience because it could be a learning chance. When we experience something strange or new it can be scary at first. However, if we think about it, human beings are always learning and changing. That is how we grow. A baby doesn’t suddenly start walking does it? At first the baby has to crawl ; and then stand; and after that take a few unsteady steps. After a month or so, the baby can walk. Sometimes babies fall but they never stop moving and improving their walking skills. By learning to walk babies learn to make their world wider.
In the same way , when you learn English there is a high chance that you will make a lot of grammar errors. That is good for learning! Open your mind to every language learning challenge and see it as an opportunity to improve your skill! If we don’t open our minds, we limit ourselves, our world-view and we cannot fully enjoy life.The world is always changing and we have to accept that change is a necessary part of growing and learning. Open your mind, develop your skills and look for lessons in every experience of life. Let’s step out of our comfort zone and increase our learning scope of the world!
